Frequently Asked Questions about the Third Coast Festival / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition:

What are the length restrictions for entries?
Entries can range from 2-60 minutes. In the past, winning entries have been as short as six minutes and as long as 60 minutes.

Can I enter a whole series?
If you're thinking of entering a series, please select the strongest segment. If that program wins an award, the entire series will be recognized.

Can I enter a program that includes a number of separate features and interviews?
Each feature within a program that presents multiple features, such as All Things Considered or This American Life, is a separate entry. Enter the strongest feature and if it wins an award, the program will be credited as well.

How many entries may an organization submit?
Organizations, such as a production company or radio station, may submit an unlimited number of entries to the competition. Ongoing radio programs, such as Weekend Edition or The World, may submit up to six entries by staff producers. Independent producers may submit up to three entries total.

How do I qualify as a "Best New Artist?"
You qualify if you’ve been working in the audio field for less than two years and if you recorded, wrote and mixed the entry submitted. If you're still wondering if you qualify, please contact us directly.

Can co-producers submit an entry?
There's no problem with two or more producers submitting a single entry. If the entry wins an award, there will be a fee required to cover the cost of additional trophies. Co-productions are not eligible for the Best New Artist award.

How do I nominate someone for the Audio Luminary Award (formerly the Lifetime Achievement Award)?
Please fill out the nomination form and encourage others to follow-up with letters of support. Send the form and supporting emails to info@thirdcoastfestival.org.

When will winners be notified?
Winners will be notified in early September that they've won an award. They will learn which specific award they've won at the 2005 Third Awards Ceremony on October 22, in Chicago.

Who will be judging this year’s competition?
The names and bios of this year's judges will be available on this site in early summer.

What if I have questions about securing international music rights?
Regarding international music rights, please check with the station or outlet that first presented the work. If you have further questions, please contact us. As these issues often take some time to resolve, the earlier you're able to inquire about them, the better.

Can I resubmit my entry from last year?
Yes, because our eligibility window spans two years. For this year’s competition, your entry must have been presented publicly on the radio, Internet or in a gallery/museum setting between July 1, 2003, and July 22, 2005.

Will editors of the winning work receive credit?
Editors will receive credit on this site, at the awards ceremony and on the national broadcast.

Do you accept pieces that were produced for commercial radio and other commercial venues?
Yes, as long as the entries document a place, time, person, event, community or issue. These include but are not limited to investigative reports, narrative stories, personal essays or audio portraits. For more information please download the Call For Entries.
