Radio transmissions are heard all over the world, from the largest urban centers to the smallest mountain villages. But what defines radio from a particular place, and what makes it different from radio created elsewhere? The Third Coast International Audio Festival’s Julie Shapiro is joined by professionals from four different countries -- Australia, Belgium, Canada and the United States -- who will play examples and talk about public radio broadcasting in their respective homelands. They will touch on issues of style and essence, general strengths and weaknesses, what epitomizes a country’s radio identity, and where radio might be headed in the not-so-distant future.  After the discussion, we’ll celebrate the Third Coast Festival’s fifth anniversary with cake and refreshments.

One Ring Zero with Special Guests Rick Moody and Julia Slavin
Friday, October 21, 8 – 10 p.m.

Ira Glass, host and producer of This American Life, interviews the winners of the fifth annual Third Coast Festival / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition and presents excerpts from their remarkable documentaries. These newly minted winners, announced just the night before at the Third Coast Festival's Awards Ceremony, will describe how their award winning productions developed from story idea into a beautifully-told documentary and will take comments and questions from the audience.
