May 31, 2008 (#48)- The Sobbing Vern Show
Originally aired May 20, 2006

Because of some broadcasting rights issues, we're unable to offer this week's show online. But we've given links to the stories below. Check them out!

Butterfly Lady
Brett Meyers - Independent Producer

Residents of Pacific Grove, California -- where 18,000 Monarch butterflies come to mate every year -- know Ro Vaccaro as the butterfly lady, and she usually wears at least one butterfly emblem every day.

The Sobbing Celebrant
Natalie Kestecher - Independent Producer, Australia

When Natalie Kestecher enrolled in a marriage celebrant certification course, she quickly learned that it's not just about saying the necessary words (which must always include 'I do') and ensuring the right forms are correctly filled in; it's also about devising meaningful ceremonies for a secular society. Theme weddings, butterfly releases, and quotes from 'The Prophet' are all popular. So what happens if you don't do themes, you hate 'The Prophet' and you think butterfly releases are yucky?

Who Is Vern Nash?
Thelon Oeming - Independent Producer, Outfront

The day Thelon Oeming moved into an apartment in a working class area of Toronto he saw a hunched back man shouting to himself in the middle of the street. Soon after that, the sound of an accordian floated across the street and Thelon discovered that this apparently crazy man was not only his neighbour but a musician. His curiosity was aroused. Who was this talented man tormented by demon voices?

May 24, 2008 (#93)- The Repetition Show

Meat Factory Ear Worms
Richie Beirne and Ronan Kelly - Producers, RTE

Sometimes a song gets stuck in your head -- the same refrain over and over again -- until it nearly drives you insane. Or maybe not insane. Sometimes the tunes in your head can be soothing, even empowering. For Richie Beirne, they were a real lifesaver at a time and place when he was surrounded by death.

Deviation
Marianne Rahn-Erickson - Independent Producer

A lot of difficult decisions in life come down to a fundamental predicament: should I stay and fight? Or should I just give up and go? Marianne Rahn-Erickson weaves together a story that, at its heart, is about this choice. It involves a dog, a car accident, a marriage, and a quirky epiphany that changed her life forever.

Mantra Trailer
Delaney Hall - Re:sound

Lots of things benefit from repetition, few things actually require it. But a mantra, which by its very nature has to be repeated over and over again, is nothing without it. And mantras are also eminently transportable, as Sherri Lynn Wood can attest. Sherri travels around the country inviting people into her "mantra trailer," a mobile meditation space, recording studio, and site of mysterious broadcast in the form of a 1972 breadbox trailer.

Can You Say Haa?
Reena Katz - Independent Producer

Violinist and sound artist Reena Katz was often told a story when she was younger and for a long time she believed the story was true. But, as she grew up, she began to understand that THIS particular story was a lot more complicated than previously thought.

The Tourist (excerpt)
Martin Williams - Producer, Resonance FM

Tourists travel to thousands of places every year. Almost 80 million tourists traveled to France in 2007. 60 million went to Spain. And another 50 million went to China. All of those tourists, of course, had very, very different experiences wherever they went. But Martin Williams somehow evokes what ALL tourists might feel, abroad in an unfamiliar place...

May 17, 2008 (#70)- The One Room Schoolhouse Show
Originally aired May 26, 2007

The One Room School in the 21st Centuy
Neenah Ellis - Producer

You might think the one-room schoolhouse is a phenomenon from a bygone era, but there are still a fewhundred of these schools left in the United States. They're often far from cities, in the most remote corners of the country, sometimes at the end of unpaved roads. The kids who attend one-room schools have close relationships with the other students, get lots of individual attention from their teachers, and often benefit from the small family-like community. Veteran producer Neenah Ellis traveled from Maui to Maine, visiting seven one-room schoolhouses to see what was going on in these vestiges of a time gone by.

Interview with Neenah Ellis

Re:sound host Gwen Macsai talks with Neenah Ellis about the declining numbers of one room schools in the U.S. and what one room schools can teach us about education.

Featured Music:

Takagi Masakatsu, “Come March,” Childish Music (Staubgold Germany, 2005)

May 10 , 2008 (#92)- The Kyla Brettle Show

Note! Because of some rights issues, we're unable to offer this show on the website. We wish we could!

This week: two curious stories from one of the most talented and curious producers we know...

Affairs of the Mind
Kyla Brettle - Producer, Australia

They say curiosity killed the cat, right? Well, that's not the only thing it's killed or maimed. It turned Lot's wife into a pillar of salt, it exposed the great and powerful Wizard of Oz as a simple 'man behind the curtain' and of course it never did squat for Lois Lane. Yes, that driving human 'need to know' can wreak havoc on a relationship. Just ask a private eye, paid by one spouse to find out about the other...

"Affairs of the Mind" was commissioned by ABC Radio National's Radio Eye.

The Trouble with Rick
Kyla Brettle - Producer, Australia

An acoustic imagining of what it's like to be Rick Tarulli -- a man who suffers from a condition of the inner ear, which gives him something like super-hearing.

"The Trouble with Rick" was commissioned by ABC Radio’s Music Unit and premiered on ABC Classic FM.

Featured Music:

E-Rock, "Shrink Ray", Conscious (Audio Dregs, 2003)
Piano Magic, "I am the sub-librarian", Low Birth Weight (Rocket Girl, 1999)
J. Spaceman, "Musicbox Underwater", Mister Lonely (Drag City, 2008)

Check out Kyla Brettle's website.
Hear "Into the School of Music," another documentary by Kyla, which follows young musicians auditioning for Australia's most competitive music school.
