About the ShortDocs

Here
at the Third Coast Festival we mostly consider ourselves curators, constantly seeking creative and memorable audio work to share with the world. But once a year we relish the opportunity to actually help bring new work into the world, via the Third Coast Festival ShortDocs.

From 2003-2005 we commissioned three sets of ShortDocs from radio producers - four stories about a different subject each year: thirst (2003), darkness (2004) and games (2005.) Then starting in 2006 we began inviting anyone and everyone to try their hand at making short audio stories based on a unique challenge each year: 99 Ways to Tell a Radio Story (2006) and Dollar Storeys (2007.) The ShortDocs have became an annual public audio project, inviting producers and listeners alike to explore the versatility and flexibility of the documentary form. Everyone is welcome to participate and all are encouraged to consider producing sound-rich stories ranging from literal to metaphorical, narrative to sound-rich, cultural to political.

Announcing the 2008 ShortDocs / public audio challenge!

For the 2008 ShortDocs / public audio challenge we're collaborating with the Prelinger Library (San Francisco) -
a veritable temple of printed ephemera. For Radio Ephemera we're inviting anyone/everyone to submit short audio stories (up to 3 minutes) that include the voice of a stranger and are inspired by two of five books chosen from the Prelinger Library. How can you resist titles like: "Trees as Good Citizens," "The Stork Didn't Bring You," "The Big Strike," "Control of Body and Mind," and "Trailer Ahoy!"? Of course you can't! Get busy!

Have a look through the books and find out how to some Radio Ephemera here.
