We’re Independent — Thanks To You!

We’re so grateful that you helped us raise over $50,000 (and counting) and made our “We Need Third Coast” Campaign a success! We couldn’t have made this happen without our entire community. (And it’s not too late: If you want to support all of the work that goes into the Third Coast Competition, you can still donate.)

In relaunching the independent Third Coast Competition, we’re focused on honoring what has animated the Third Coast Competition for over 20 years: Creating a space in an ever-evolving industry where the pursuit of craft, experimentation, and excellence is celebrated above all else; where deep listening and care is centered; and where we recognize the essential force that the audio community plays in building our world.

We Need Third Coast Flash Sale

As a thank you for the community support in helping us build this new reality, our first deadline of the 2024-25 Competition Cycle — the We Need Third Coast Flash Sale Deadline — will be two weeks after our launch date, and will feature our lowest rates of the Competition.

The Preview

What can you expect from this cycle of the newly-independent Competition? Third Coast Competition is that it will look very similar to past years. We’ll be offering our classic eight expansive categories as an entry point for you to enter your work; we’ll focus on a robust listening and judging process to select the cycle of Winners (the most essential work being made in the industry right now); and we’ll continue to honor as much work as possible through our Finalists program.

We are working on building the future of the Competition as a program that is more responsive to the needs of the people who make this industry tick, and that can be a pipeline for new resources, initiatives, and support networks. (And we’re looking for partners to greet that future: If that’s you, get in touch with us here: info@thirdcoastfestival.org)

2024-25 Third Coast Competition Q&A

Click on the questions below to reveal essential details about the Call for Entries, and stay tuned for more information through our newsletter.

Will you still name Third Coast Winners?

Yes! And they will maintain the same level of quality as always: including our annual digital showcase of the most extraordinary audio works from around the world.

Will you still name Third Coast Finalists?

Oh, yes! We think it’s essential to lift up more outstanding work from the field, which is why we now name Finalists every Competition cycle. This is a program we’re hopeful about expanding in the future: we want to expand the spotlight that Third Coast can shine on underrepresented talent in the field.

When should my work have been premiered or published by, in order to be eligible for this year’s Call for Entries?

The broad eligibility window for this year’s Competition is April 9, 2021 - March 20, 2025 for Audio Unbound entries, and April 9, 2022 - March 20, 2025 for all other categories. This window is slightly longer than our previous windows, to accommodate for the delay in opening this year’s Call for Entries!

How can I be sure that my work “fits” the Call for Entries? What if my work is different from what I think you’re looking for?

Our goal is to maintain categories that welcome the most diverse range of narrative audio work from around the world, in any language. We want to hear your narrative audio works in documentary, non-fiction, fiction, sound art, oral history, audio walks, speculative fiction, audio theater, and audio experiments that have no formal genre. Please check out our Competition Categories, and don’t hesitate to write to us if you have questions: competition@thirdcoastfestival.org.

Is entering the Call for Entries affordable? Will you still have Collective Pricing?

Definitely. The Collective Pricing Model (allowing you to choose the rate that best fits your needs) is core to the independent Third Coast Competition, and all of Third Coast programming. We’re fiercely committed to maintaining low fees for self-paid entrants and encouraging a culture of access within the audio industry that pairs rates with the We'll announce this year’s Entry Rates when we launch.

Will audio makers in the field still select the Award-Winners through the Final Round Judging Program?

Yes, and we’re excited to make this virtual cohort even more international and diverse each year. You can check out last year’s Final Round Judges here.

What makes the independent Third Coast Call for Entries & Competition different from the Third Coast/RHDF Competition?

For now, not much: Our goal is to maintain the excellence of the Third Coast Award-Winners, Finalists & Judging Process. But going independent also means that we have a lot more freedom. And that’s really important to us.

For years, we’ve worked with a Third Coast Listening Team to review every single entry we receive, taking careful notes about you and your work, compiling a database of entries and entrants. We’re also constantly adding questions to our entry form to better understand you and the work you do, and how we can support you throughout your career.

What’s the future of the independent Third Coast Call for Entries & Competition?

We’re working toward a model where this process is a powerful engine for field building programs that we can offer to as many entrants as possible. This includes: residencies, feedback opportunities, mentorship programs, more collective pricing options, maker sessions. We see the Call for Entries as an entry point to a robust, year-round dialogue with all entrants, who we hope to support over the arc of their careers.

How can you support the independent Third Coast Call for Entries & Competition?

Enter your work! And consider partnering with Third Coast! We’re looking for institutional partners and individual supporters. If you’d like to be one of them, get in touch: info@thirdcoastfestival.org.
