This hour: foxes, rabbits, snakes, whales, birds, lambs, and dogs.
Foxhunters
by David Isay (All Things Considered, 1993)
For over 60 years, along the Texas-Louisiana border, Hinkel Schillings and Shade Pate have gone fox hunting. Several times a week they sit around a fire from sunset to dawn listening to their hounds bark. That's all there really is to fox hunting: listening.
Rabbit Hunter
by Matthew Ozug (All Things Considered, 2003)
After Florida's sugar cane crops die, the harvested fields are burned, sending hundreds of rabbits out of the fire and, as they say, into the frying pan. Dozens of teenage boys wait at the edge of the fields, broken cane stalks in hand, ready to pounce. They eat the rabbits they catch, or sell them to neighbors for a couple dollars each.
Snakes
by Jay Allison (Animals and Other Stories, 1985)
A meditation on the worth (and worthlessness) of the legless reptile.
Killer Whale
by Jay Allison (Animals and Other Stories, 1985)
A love story between a woman and a whale.
A Young Birder's Field Guide
by Gretta Cohn (Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, 2008)
Birding is a hobby mostly associated with people who have a lot of time and patience. Like retirees. But maybe that's an ageist stereotype. If you ask birder Luke Seitz of Portland, I think he'd say it is. Considering he is only 14.
Silence of the Lambs
by Iain Reid and Kent Hoffman (Outfront, CBC, 2008)
To Do: check the mail, feed the dogs... help the sheep give birth.
As Close to Nature As I Can
by Carmen Delzell with Emily Botein (Stories From the Heart of the Land, 2008)
Carmen Delzell has gone back to the land. She lives in the Mexico desert with only her dogs and donkeys as company. It's a life she chose, but it isn't always the life she imagined.
Dead Animal Man
by Ira Glass (All Things Considered, 1989)
Did you know there is actually a person whose job it is to scrape the dead animal carcasses off the road after they're killed by cars? Well, there is. And in one of his earlier pieces of radio, before the days of This American Life, Ira Glass tells that person's story.
