More than 20 years ago, musicologist Ned Sublette attended the Missouri Auction School in Kansas City, and brought along his tape recorder.

The result? A lively, still-relevant composition that introduces and blends the skills and insights of master auctioneers, the aspirations and experiences of fellow students, and reflections on the economic realities of rural America.

The Auctioneer was commissioned by New American Radio, and produced in 1989.
