This hour: people living in the in-betweens.

by Joe Richman (All Things Considered, 1998)
Jeff is a teenager. He is goofy, smart, and charming. In addition to these adjectives, here are a few more: black and white and brown.

The Second Mom
by Sara Martinez, Kaari Pitkin, Melissa Allison, Sanda Htyte (Radio Rookies, 2007)
Sara Martinez is just a teenager but she is also a big sister, a daughter, a translator, and a second mom. And, as a result, she has a weariness and wisdom about her that few other teenagers do.

Ladino Transformation
by Sandy Tolan (All Things Considered, 2004)
We've all felt betwixt and between at some point, but when an entire people and their culture start emigrating, whether by eviction or choice, the blending and churning of lives and lands creates all kinds of new hybrids. In the case of thousands of Spanish Jews, who were kicked out of Spain over 500 years ago and fled to the Balkans, there's one particularly fascinating result of this mixing: their language, Ladino.

According to Form
by Neil Sandell (Outfront, CBC, 2007)
Tracey Isaacs thought she knew who she was -- then one day, as a teenager, she snooped around in her attic and uncovered a piece of her history she'd never known about. Later, as an adult, these questions of identity came rushing back to her when university forms asked her to identify her race. And she didn't know which box to check.

Dreams Deferred
by Christian, Kaari Pitkin, Melissa Allison, Sanda Htyte (Radio Rookies, 2007)
Christian lives between two countries and the consequences for this in-between-ness could be serious. He is between generations, countries, and governmental policies. That's a lot for a sixteen year old.

A Transgender Childhood
by Tina Antolini (TCF's Radio Ephemera, 2008)
Growing up isn't easy when you feel as if your mind is one gender, and your body another.
