2016 / Jamil / Jungala Radio, Calais refugee camp, France

A spare and gripping account of one man's journey fleeing violence in Afghanistan with his family.
Jamil, the producer and subject of this piece, is a resident of the unofficial refugee camp in Calais, France, known as "The Jungle". The story was created as part of the incredible Jungala Radio, an audio training program for people living in the camp. Jungala got its name from a 12-year-old producer named Adam, who said, "The jungle is where animals and insects sleep and we are not animals." 'La' means 'no' in Arabic.
Be sure to read the behind-the-scenes interview with the program's volunteer staff to learn more about Jungala's origins, goals, and how you can support their work.

Jamil (not his real name) fled Afghanistan in 2015, and makes audio stories with Jungala Radio in the Calais refugee camp. When he left Afghanistan, he left behind his own business, an electronics shop. While he specializes in mobile phones, if you have a problem with any electronic device, Jamil can fix it.
