British writer and radio presenter Hardeep Singh Kohli remembers the loneliness of being a goalkeeper, the player who spends 90 minutes looking at his colleagues' backs.
They call it a team sport, but for the goalie it's a life of inaction interrupted by frantic activity, occasionally bordering on near-suicide. "A goalkeeper can spend the whole game saving the team from embarrassment - then make one mistake and he's the villain."
The Loneliness of the Goalkeeper won the Third Coast Directors' Choice Award in the 2010 Third Coast / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition. The story was produced in 2008 by Adam Fowler with presenter Hardeep Singh Kohli of Ladbroke Productions, for BBC Radio 4.
