There are some 14,000 people living on the streets of Las Vegas, and Nevada ranks second in the nation in homeless population per capita.

And yet it's easy to spend a whole weekend on the Las Vegas Strip without spotting a sign of a crisis. Still, seeing evidence is a matter of knowing — or perhaps choosing — where to look.

Sucked into the Tunnels Beneath Las Vegas won the Best News Feature Award in the 2010 Third Coast / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition. The story was produced in 2008 by Adam Burke and edited by Jacob Conrad for NPR's Day to Day.
