Joe Frank, the original radio maverick, is known for leaving listeners more than a bit uncomfortable.
In Sweepstakes Winner, he imagines a seemingly celebratory phone call from KCRW's Fund Drive that is quickly interrupted.
Note: In the early 2000’s Third Coast was working on a fundraiser edition of Re:sound, which airs on WBEZ. We thought this piece would be a perfect fit. We love how this piece pokes fun at public radio’s earnestness - including its very dark hilarity - so we aired it, and then asked people to send money to WBEZ to support this type of work. Money did not flow in, instead really angry phone calls did, and the WBEZ bosses never trusted us with a fundraiser show again.
Today, in radio heaven, It would make Joe Frank so happy to know how he got Third Coast in so much trouble.
